Dover/Kent County MPO staff traveled north over the weekend to attend the CT Bike Walk Summit 2011. Bike Walk CT, an advocacy group for better biking and walking in Connecticut, sponsored the single-day summit that was held at the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies building on the campus of Yale University.

Keynote speaker was Andy Clarke, president of the League of American Bicyclists who discussed what a bicycle friendly America can look like and some how-to’s of continued advocacy toward that goal.

Summit lectures discussed why bicycle friendly communities can also be walk friendly,  the economic development benefits of walk and bike friendly communities, how legislators and bike enthusiasts have made the case for bicycle friendliness  in Connecticut and other bikesumm/walk activities in the state.

The summit ended with walk and bicycle tours around New Haven, showing examples of some of the strides the city has made to better biking, including an up and coming bike trail that will be converted from an old canal.
